A Guide to Horse Feed
Factors that influence the type and quantity of feed a horse receives include its age, body size, quality of health and workload. Aside from quality feed, some horses may need additional supplements for proper nutrition. dressage saddles
Having continual access to forage is the way to feed horses, not giving them large meals at specific times. Their stomachs are small relative to their size and cannot hold large quantities of feed. Quality forage is a horse’s traditional staple, and they should always have access to it for good health. At all times grass, hay or oats should be available to them so they can eat small amounts here and there. It aids in their digestion and keeps them healthy in the process.
Rather than be fed immediately before or after heavy work or strain, horses should be given time to digest their meals and wind down. Their daily rations should be based on weight, not on volume. When feeding horses, mix their feed together, but do not include it with anything that has been left over. Horses should always have access to fresh water and a salt or mineral lick. Horses may need nutritional supplements if they are aged, infirm, or if they are heavy workers, athletic or engaged in breeding. Keep in mind that horses with access to water, minerals and quality forage will not need supplements to stay healthy.
