Nib Rare
Writing instruments are implements or objects which are used in the process of writing. Even though the name may suggest so, most writing instruments can be used for various other functions like painting and drawing. Critically, a writing instrument is characterized by its controllable ability to produce a smooth line. For the users who are blind, for them one of the popularly used writing instruments is the stylus, which is used along with a slate for transcribing in the Braille.
Types of Writing Instruments
- Autonomous writing instruments
These instruments are known to have a useful life as long as they have physical existence. These can again be sub divided into two types:
Without pigment
Some of the oldest writings of the world are known to have been created by making incisions on flat surfaces with rigid tools. Several ancient cultures like the Sumerians, the Babylonians and the Mycenaean had practiced this form of writing in their different styles.
With pigment
Romans were the first ones to introduce the concept of lead pencil. Since then, the lead pencils have undergone transformation many times over and taken the modern day shape of graphite wooden pencils. Chalks and crayons also belong to this category.
- Assisted writing instruments
These instruments need an added pigment to be able to write and are of no use when empty.
Pens
This is one of the commonest writing instruments with a hard tip with ink on the surface.
Dip pens
These pens have a nib point and a tiny ink reservoir which is used by capillary action. These need to be periodically filled by ink and have a proper pen holder. Examples of dip pens are:
- Reed pens
- Quill pens
Fountain pens
These pens developed in the 19th century, feature a nib unit, a tiny ink chamber, and have an external casing. These can be refilled using any of the three methods:
- Eyedropper method
- Suction method
- Disposable cartridges
Disposable pens
These were introduced in the 20th century and these include the ballpoint pens and gel pens.
Pencils
These are the traditional thin wooden cylindrical structures with graphite core.
Brushes
These instruments have bristles and lend a flowing stroke on applied on a surface.
