When I was younger, I loved herb gardens. A lot of my favorite memories are chasing my brother and sisters around the herb gardens in the English West Country where we went on holiday. A lot of the best times of my live are connected to the smell of those gardens.
One of the biggest concerns for people who want to grow an English herb garden is a lack of space. Many people have seen the vast British gardens and assume that you need an estate to grow herbs. This is of course wrong and a reasonably sized garden can be converted into a garden people would be envious of. Often these smaller gardens are called English cottage herb gardens.
For those with visions of grandeur, English herb gardens can be made on almost any scale. These are often known as Formal English herb gardens. Due to their size sunlight is vital. You want to make sure that your garden gets the most sunlight possible. A little planning now can really help later. Be sure to check that your bigger plants are not going to deprive the littler ones of sunlight. As a general rule stick the smaller herbs in the center and get larger as you move outwards. The very large herbs should be put in the corners.
Most British gardens start with a simple shape (Or two) and then use that as a guideline for where to place their herbs. The shapes are really only limited by your imagination, but knots, lines, diamonds, circles and even mazes all look great. You do not have to stick to one shape and many gardens can consist of many different carefully placed shapes.
Traditionally medicinal herbs were very common in British gardens, as the Brits were firm believers in the healing power of herbs. This tradition lives on today and herbs such as milk thistle, chamomile, peppermint and valerian make great additions to any herb garden.
If you would rather eat the herbs than use them to heal yourself, there are plenty of excellent herbs that work well in any British herb garden. Basil, parsley and chives are all great for food preparation and relatively easy to grow. You may want to grow these close to your door, so that you can race out to grab some if you need them while cooking!
Many people also just want a garden that looks great and will give their children/ nephews and nieces a place to fall in love with. For these people it is best to use a large number of perennial herbs (Herbs that live for at least 2 years) as these herbs look and smell great all throughout the year. On top of that they remain healthy as pests and diseases have a difficult time infecting them. Herbs such as sage, thyme, honey thistle, rosemary and lemon balm are all great for this purpose.
