A Primer on Hyperhidrosis
We all sweat. It’s our body’s standard way of regulating our temperature. This function is very important because even if we’re staying in cool temperatures, our body generates heat metabolizing the food we take.Without the ability to sweat, our body systems will not be able to perform optimally. Extreme sweating, however, is a cause of concern. Too much perspiration suggests that you are releasing fluidsrandomly, and may even be to the extreme that it can result to dehydration. Excessive sweating is a condition known as hyperhidrosis. There are two classes of hyperhidrosis. Some people suffering from hyperhidrosis tend to perspire excessively in all parts of their body. Others tend to sweat excessively in just a few select places. They only sweat excessively in their hands, feet, underarms, or their face.
Hyperhidrosis is quite prevalent; researches reveal that it affects about 2-5% of the population. It makes no distinction between males and females. For most it begins at puberty and can progress into adulthood. There’s helpful information here about how to stop excess sweating. While this predisposition to sweat profusely appears to be genetic, it can skip generations.
How come this condition exists? It’s still unknown Studies indicate that there’s nothing wrong with the sweat glands of people with this condition.. But it appears that there is an imbalance in the neurotransmitters of the brain responsible for sending the signal to sweat. Hyperhidrosis can be triggered by non-physical causes. For instance, this condition is linked to apprehension and PTSD. There are also physical conditions that contribute to hyperhidrosis. These include hyperthyroidism, being overweight, diabetes, tumors, menopause. Weaning away from from addictive substances can also produce excessive sweating. Uppers in our diet such as caffeine and nicotine are also known to trigger this tendency. If you notice symptoms, visit a general practitioner-generalist or a dermatologist for a testing. Diagnosis is usually made via an iodine starch test to know if you’ve got hyperhidrosis.
You can select from a variety of choices for hyperhidrosis depending on your body chemistry and the gravity of the condition. Mild cases of hyperhidrosis can usually be addressed using over-the-counter antiperspirants, especially the clinical varieties. There are also aluminum chloride antiperspirants, such as Drysol, Hypercare, Certain Dri and XeracAC.
There are also pills and injection treatments available if creams and roll-ons are not your thing. Anticholinergic medications such as Glypcopyrrolate have been found effective. Cosmetic cure botox can also help manage excessive sweating.There is also iontophoresis, a procedure which involves disabling sweat glands through electricity. These interventions, however, tend to be short-term remedies.
If you prefer non-traditional medicines, visit an acupuncturist or maybe a hypnotist The latter if particularly effective for mental health-realted hyperhidrosis. If all else fails, surgery is recommended. You can get a procedure called sympathectomy. In this procedure, the nerve the sends the sweat signal is cut or burned. Sympathectomy does not require hospitalization
While generally non-life threatening, excessive sweating it can significantly affect personal and social life.
