Horses and Sunburn
As human beings we are aware of the threat of remaining in the sunlight too long. We are aware that if we waste to much time to relax in the sun we run the risk of turning a nice suntan into an unpleasant sunburn. In addition to being unappealing and painful we are aware that sunburns often leads to skin cancer. We employ all varieties of tricks from sun tan lotion to light weight covers to prevent our
skin from frying.
As they may be big and appear to be infallible (a feature that every horse owner is aware is an illusion) we often ignore the affect that the sunlight has on our horses.
Equines, same as people, can burn. Sunburn is most often observed on equines with a light colored hair coat for example Appaloosa’s, Lipizzans, Paints, Pintos, Andalusian, and Grays. Horse owners who possess equines with pasty noses and lots of pale skin around the eyes often find themselves treating their horse companions for burns. A sudden change in hormones, like horses that have been bred, may cause a horse to acquire sunburn. Even though dark horses aren’t typically irritated by sunburn the sun often bleaches the dark hair. In some cases harsh sunburn is believed to lead to some liver damage.
Horse owners should also be aware that some medications may also trigger sunburn in horses. Tetracycline is one medication which has been known to trigger sunburn in a few horses.
Horse sunburn looks the same as human sunburn. The skin turns an irritated colour of pink or a violent red. If skin is left raw long enough it begins to dry and crack. Horses which are suffering from harsh sunburn will start to break out in blisters. Sunburn could cause hair deficiency.
Treating sunburned eyes is fairly trouble-free. All an owner must do is purchase a fly mask for his or her horse. When using a fly mask it is crucially important to make sure that the fly mask is kept clean. Basically use a hose plus a sprayer to clean the filth and eye substance from the mask. After rinsing the fly mask suspend it in the sun to dry.
Several fly masks have an addition that protects the top of the nose from becoming sunburned. If you don’t own a fly mask that covers your equines nostril all you’ll want to do is rub your horses nose with sunscreen that you can purchase at a local drugstore.
Some horse owners, especially ones who are interested in showing, try to avoid the sun from damaging their horses coat by keeping them inside usually in the day time hrs when the sun is essentially the most destructive. Other proprietors opt to keep their horses covered with a light-weight weight turn out blanket or fly sheet to safeguard their horses hair coat. Certainly one of the reasons some owners prefer a blanketed equine to one kept indoors is they think that keeping a horse stalled and fully free of sunlight often leads to depression.
