The Father’s Role In Modern Societies
Most sociologists agree that the role of the man in the last 50 years hasn’t changed as much as that of the woman. Nevertheless, looking at the father’s role from a distance it becomes obvious that his role hasn’t changed much in the last years. Especially, compared with the mother’s role, which has become more multidimensional, the father’s tasks remain pretty much the same, regardless of the country, ethnic group, religion, geography etc.
Even though women’s role has changed significantly during the last 50-60 years, that of men remains pretty much the same and it can be said that men are still undomesticated. Men, in most cases, still deal with mainly outdoor activities and they don’t seem to take up many of the domestic ones, including the upbringing of children.
Whether in Africa, Europe or the Americas, the male figure is expected to take up the responsibility of providing the means necessary for the survival of the family. In rural Africa that can be translated into going hunting or cultivate the land. In the more modern societies that could mean being away at work for many hours a day and try to earn as much as possible. That is also related to the fact that still in many countries men and women do not earn the same amount of money, even in the do the same or similar jobs.
That’s why many families end up following the traditional model a priori and without even thinking about it, where the father will be at work and the mum will stay at home with the kids. Going the opposite direction would have a negative impact on the family’s finances and for that reason not many couples follow that model.
Male parenting is in a sense limited by those social and working norms of modern societies. Getting to bring the two roles closer will take a long time if it is meant to happen ever. Honouring fatherhood with Father’s Day gifts is one social reaction to that problem but is that enough?
