If you want to become an expert at trading cocoa futures then you have to be ready to work hard and follow in the footsteps of the wall street professionals that have been trading this contract for decades.
If you are looking for some new strategy that will magically open the door to millions then you should give up right now, turn off your computer, and go to the race track because with that mentality you will have a better chance at turning a profit betting on the ponies than trading cocoa futures.
The fact is if you want to make it in this market then you are going to have to leave all of those foolish get rich quick notions at the door. I’m not saying that you can’t make a lot of money doing this, but if ever want to be successful you have to treat it like a business not a video game.
So, here are some time tested rules for trading cocoa futures. I guarantee if you show them to any successful trader they will tell you that they follow them religiously because if they didn’t then they wouldn’t be successful.
1. Manage your risk
I understand the temptation to bet the farm on one trade because you just know you won’t lose, but that type of thinking has left many a trader broke and depressed. Even though you can make more money if you risk more its still not a good idea because what if you lose? Can you really handle losing 20% of your account on one trade? I don’t know about you but just the thought of it makes me a little sick. You have to trade as if every trade could be a loss because guess what, every trade can in fact be a loss. No matter how great your methods may be none of us can predict the market so you have to trade accordingly. Most people say you should risk between 2 – 3% per trade, but I say that you should never risk more than you are comfortable losing if the trade goes south.
2. Don’t over trade
There is no quicker way to lose an account than by jumping in the market every time there is the slightest bit of movement. The fact is most movement in the cocoa futures market isn’t worth trading. If you want to be successful then you have to be patient and wait for the good opportunities to arise. This allows you to carefully analyze every move you take to make sure that the odds are thoroughly stacked in your favor before risking your capital.
3. Stop relying on indicators
So many new traders come into this business and thinks its as simple as finding the right indicator and you will automatically win every trade that you take and become a millionaire, but if it was that easy then everyone would be a trader. The truth is that indicators will fail you more often than not and if you want to become a member of the group of elite traders that are able to profit from the market year in and year out then you are going to have to learn to read the price action for yourself. You think the guys on wall street are sitting around waiting for an indicator to tell them to take a trade?
Trading cocoa futures can be very profitable but only if you do it the right way. Just follow these rules and you will be on your way to becoming an elite trader.
